  • Alma Mater: Butler University (BA, 2004)
  • Started coaching during his undergrad years at Butler, assisting at Ben Davis HS in Indianapolis for three seasons
    • Also coached on the AAU circuit in Indianapolis from 2001-2006
  • After graduating, spent one year at Ohio State as a graduate assistant on Thad Matta‘s first staff
  • Worked as an assistant at Wabash Valley for one year before joining Kelvin Sampson‘s staff at Indiana as video coordinator
    • After Sampson was let go in 2008, Steele served as an assistant under interim head coach Dan Dakich
  • Originally came to Xavier in 2008, hired as DBO by then head coach Sean Miller
    • Retained as an assistant coach under new head coach Chris Mack in 2009 and promoted to associate head coach in 2016
    • Was on the sidelines for some of the most successful seasons in XU history, including a Big East title in 2018 and four Sweet Sixteens
  • Promoted to head coach at Xavier in March 2018, following Mack’s departure to Louisville
    • Went 19-16 in his first season, reaching the second round of the 2019 NIT
    • Fired in March 2022 after going 70-50 in four seasons with two NITs but no NCAA Tournaments
  • Later that same month, Steele was announced as the new head coach at Miami (OH)
  • Along with his wife, Amanda, has one son; Steele is the brother of current Akron head coach John Groce
