Trent Johnson fired by TCU after four seasons

TCU Horned Frogs head basketball coach Trent Johnson was fired by the school Sunday night, according to CBSSports’ Jon Rothstein. No official announcement has been made by the school, but one is expected soon.

Johnson was just 50-79 overall during his tenure at TCU, including a 12-21 (2-16 Big 12) mark this past season. Johnson had just one winning season of the four and never led the Horned Frogs to the postseason. TCU hasn’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 1998 and have not won an NCAA Tournament game since beating Marshall in the first round of the 1987 Big Dance.

Johnson’s tenure spanned the first four years in the Big 12 for TCU, who moved into the conference after seven seasons in the Mountain West. In Big 12 competition, the Horned Frogs are just 8-64 and have finished 9th or 10th in each season.

The four-year tenure also goes along with what appears to be a recurring theme in Johnson’s career. Prior to TCU, Johnson spent four seasons as the head coach at LSU. Before that, four seasons at Stanford. He did last five years at Nevada, his first head coaching position.

This is the first head coaching job that Johnson has been fired from, as the previous moves were (at least publicly) on his own terms. He led each of his three previous teams to NCAA and NIT berths, but hasn’t been to the Big Dance since 2009.
