Trent Johnson officially hired as Cal State Northridge head coach

After spending last season as interim head coach, Trent Johnson was hired officially on Thursday to stay with the Cal State Northridge program moving forward. Johnson and the Matadors were 7-23 this past season, dealing with uncertainty around the future of the staff and an ongoing investigation into violations committed by former head coach Mark Gottfried.

“We are extremely pleased to have Trent Johnson continue to lead our men’s basketball program,” AD Mike Izzi said in a statement. “We will continue to support Trent’s efforts in continuing to build upon the culture he has worked to establish. Coach Johnson has a long history of coaching success, in addition to supporting student welfare and achievement. He will continue to bring that focus to the student-athletes at CSUN to ensure their continued success on and off the court.”

This is the fifth head coaching stop for Johnson, who previously had stints at TCU (2012-16), LSU (2008-12), Stanford (2004-08) and Nevada (1999-2004).

“I’m excited for the future of CSUN Basketball,” Johnson said. “We look forward to continuing to build a program that the university, CSUN alumni and the community will be most proud of.”
