  • Alma Mater: Boise State University (BA, 1983)
  • Played basketball at Boise State from 1974-1978 under head coach Bus Connor; was part of the Broncos’ first-ever D-I NCAA Tournament appearance in 1976
  • Started his coaching career at Boise High School (ID) as head coach from 1980-1985
  • Joined the college assistant ranks in 1986, spending three seasons at Utah under Lynn Archibald, three under Lynn Nance at Washington and four under Willis Wilson at Rice
    • Would hire Nance later in his career as one of his assistants at LSU
  • Worked for three seasons at Stanford under Mike Montgomery before getting his first head coaching position at Nevada in 1999
    • Led the Wolfpack to a 25-9 run to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2004
  • Spent four seasons as the head coach at Stanford, going to three NCAA Tournaments and reaching the Sweet Sixteen in 2008
  • Left Stanford for the LSU job following the 2007-08 season, leading the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament in year one but only managing one NIT berth over the next three seasons
  • Most recent coaching position was a four year stint at TCU, during which the Horned Frogs did not finish higher than 9th place in the Big 12 and finished with a winning record just once
  • Was hired by Cal head coach Mark Fox in April 2019 to be deputy analyst and director of player development
  • In July 2021, Johnson was hired as the interim head coach of the Cal State Northridge Matadors in the Big West
  • Along with his wife, Jackie, has one daughter and one son
