Tennessee-Martin head coach Anthony Stewart passes away suddenly at age 50

Anthony Stewart, who had been the head coach at Tennessee-Martin since 2016, suddenly passed away on Sunday, the school announced. Stewart just was 50 years old.

“We are stunned to hear this tragic news,” AD Kurt McGuffin said in the release. “Coach Stewart was a true leader to every one of the young men he coached. He emphasized the meaning of a college degree and instilled professionalism in each of his student-athletes. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Stewart was 53-73 in four seasons at the helm, which he took over after two years as Heath Schroyer‘s associate head coach. In his first season as head coach, Stewart led the Skyhawks to a 22-13 record that ended with a trip to the CIT. Prior to his arrival, he had stints assisting at Ohio, Southern Illinois, Wyoming and Long Beach State.

No cause of death has been provided. This post will be updated when/if more information becomes available.
