UTEP coach Tim Floyd abruptly retires after loss
Tim Floyd announced his retirement from coaching Monday evening following UTEP‘s 66-52 home loss to Lamar. Floyd has been the Miners’ head coach since 2010 and previously served as the head coach at USC, Iowa State, New Orleans, Idaho and the NBA’s Bulls and Hornets.
Monday’s loss dropped the Miners to just 1-5 on the year, though Floyd cited the future of the program as one of his reasons for stepping down now. “I’m done,” he said in his post-game press conference, “I think it’s time for somebody else to have the opportunity to have the joy that I’ve had.”
Floyd has a career record of 445-278 at the Division I level and went 90-231 in 4+ seasons in the NBA. His overall record does include the 2007-08 USC season that went from 21-12 to 0-11 per NCAA sanction surrounding the O.J. Mayo recruiting scandal. Floyd officially made seven trips to the NCAA Tournament during his career, but during his time in El Paso had only made it as far as the NIT First Round (twice).
The school is expected to name an interim head coach on Tuesday. Floyd said in his press conference that he will urge new athletic director Jim Senter – who was officially introduced the same day as the retirement announcement – to look at assistants Phil Johnson and Bobby Braswell to lead the team moving forward.
