Will Jones out after three seasons at North Carolina A&T

North Carolina A&T announced on Thursday a coaching change for its men’s basketball program. Assistant coach Phillip Shumpert has been named interim head coach as the program parts with Will Jones after three seasons.

“We appreciate all that coach Jones accomplished for the North Carolina A&T men’s basketball program and wish him well in his future endeavors,” said AD Earl M. Hilton III. “We will rally around coach Shumpert as he prepares our young men for our first season in the CAA (Colonial Athletic Association).”

Jones went 37-35 during his time at the helm, having started out as an interim head coach himself. He was named MEAC COY in 2020 and won a share of the MEAC title during the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season.

The Aggies are entering their first year in the CAA after spending last season in the Big South. The Aggies finished 12-20 (6-10) last year.

Shumpert has been with the program since 2019, coming to Greensboro after a number of years coaching HS basketball in Georgia.

A national search for a permanent head coach will commence after the 2022-23 season, per the release.
