Will Jones has the interim tag removed at North Carolina A&T

Will Jones, who was named MEAC COY in 2020 after going 14-5 as interim head coach, has officially named head coach at North Carolina A&T. His predecessor, Jay Joyner, officially resigned this week after having been on suspension since December.

Director of Athletics Earl M. Hilton III had this to say in a release on Thursday: “Will did a wonderful job last season of keeping our men’s basketball team focused on success on the court and in the classroom, so we know he is committed to creating a championship culture while also making sure our student-athletes graduate and are prepared to be positive contributors to society.”

Jones had been at North Carolina A&T as an assistant since 2016 and was elevated to associate head coach by Joyner in 2018. This is the first head coaching job for Jones, a SC-native who played at South Carolina State and has extensive Division I experience as an assistant.

“I have always prayed for the chance to lead at the best institution,” Jones said in the same release. “North Carolina A&T is the best, largest and most progressive (historically black college or university) in the world. I think God has answered my prayers. I’m excited and ready to lead our program back into national prominence.”

The Aggies’ 2020-21 season will be their last in the MEAC, as the school announced it will be moving to the Big South starting in July 2021.
