Alabama A&M head coach Willie Hayes has resigned

Alabama A&M head basketball coach Willie Hayes announced his resignation on Tuesday afternoon following a 2-27 (2-16 SWAC) finish to the 2016-17 season. In six years under Hayes, the Bulldogs were just 54-122 overall and never finished higher than fifth in the SWAC standings.

In a press release, Director of Athletics Bryan Hicks had this to say: “We thank coach Hayes for his service and commitment to Alabama A&M University. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Hayes is an A&M alum who joined the staff in 1995 as an assistant, staying on under long time head coach L. Vann Pattaway until 2011 when he took over the program himself. Hayes played for Pettaway for three seasons, though he was originally recruited to the school by the legendary Ben Jobe.
