Cal changes course, fires head coach Wyking Jones
After announcing the opposite earlier this week, California is parting ways with head basketball coach Wyking Jones. Promoted in 2017, Jones was just 16-47 in two seasons as the Golden Bears’ head coach.
The on-court results aside, this decision is a bit of a confusing one. The Cal athletic department is in bad shape and reports Sunday indicate that Jones’ contract will be bought out and the main target for his replacement is former Bears’ player Jason Kidd. Jones was handed the job when Cuonzo Martin left for Missouri and he makes less than half what his predecessor made. But at some point the basketball losses will outweigh the financial savings.
Outside of Kidd, who is reportedly at the top of the wishlist, other candidates include like Montana’s Travis DeCuire and San Francisco‘s Kyle Smith.
