Dallas Texas is a city known around the world for its American football team the Cowboys. However, the name for the iconic Dallas football team was not always the Cowboys. With the original name being changed a number of times, The Dallas Rangers would eventually move to Canada. The Dallas Cowboys became immensely popular in the 1980’s and 90’s. They became the symbol of American sports around the globe. Can we imagine an alternate reality where the original name stuck and we could all be talking about the Dallas Steers or Rangers?

The love of football in Texas is legendary. Its basically considered a religion in the state. And the biggest team is without question the Dallas Cowboys. The team’s star and colors can be found all around the city as well as many other parts of America. Not to mention the international fans that the team has managed to amass in the decades. At one point, if you spoke about the NFL, the team you were speaking about was the Dallas Cowboys.
The team had some serious regular and post season success in the 80’s that was timed perfectly with a masterful marketing strategy. Tex Schramm came up with an excellent plan that saw the team gain national recognition and the nickname “America’s Team”. The marketing strategies also included the formation of the world famous Cowboys Cheerleaders.
The Dallas Cowboys have become the most successful NFL team since the 80’s. They have made an NFL record 36 playoff appearances and advanced to the Super Bowl eight times. Winning the iconic trophy a total of five times. That ,along with their steady regular season performances, have meant that regardless of the year, the Dallas Cowboys will always be a contender.
What was the Dallas Cowboys originally going to be called?
After the failure of the Dallas Texans that left the city without a football team, the NFL granted the city of Dallas a new team as part of the expansion. The oilman Chris Murchison was made the owner of the new Dallas football team. His original name was the Dallas Steers, which looking back on it, was not a great name for a football team of that stature.
Tex Schramm had the idea to change the name to the Dallas Rangers, which would have been perfect. However there was a problem with that name. There was already a team by that name. The Dallas Rangers were a baseball team that would eventually move up north into Canada. But by that time, the new name that they decided on had stuck. The Dallas Cowboys.
With Texas having a strong love affair with the cowboy lifestyle, the name seemed obvious. The Dallas Cowboys would prove to be the right name as the success that followed was huge. They always have a way of snagging the best players in the NFL and offering them obscene amounts of money in their contracts, normally breaking records in the process.
Can the Dallas Cowboys find success in the NFL this year?
The Cowboys had some plans for the draft this year, and those plans along with their record setting Micah Parsons contract is a sign of their confidence for this year. The NFL is changing and the Cowboys need to evolve with it. Their last Super Bowl win was in 1996 against the Steelers. That is a seriously long time to make the loyal fans in Dallas wait. With the likes of Micah Parsons on their team, they are at least doing all they can to guarantee some sort of success in the NFL this year. We all hope for a return to the Super Bowl for the iconic Dallas Cowboys.
