Arizona State and Herm Edwards are parting ways

Arizona State AD Ray Anderson announced on Sunday that a mutual agreement had been made to remove Herm Edwards as the Sun Devils’ head football coach. Edwards went 26-20 overall, including a 1-2 record this season following a home loss to Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

“We have made the decision to make a change in the leadership of our football program, effective immediately,” read the statement. “At the core of this is doing what is best for our current team, staff and university. I understand the frustrations out there. We must do better and that starts with our decision today.”

Edwards was hired in 2018, making a splash in the college football world. He hadn’t coached since 2008, his last season with the Kansas City Chiefs, and hadn’t worked in college since 1989 when he was the DBs coach at San José State.

There were some highlights, including three bowl appearances (with a win in the 2019 Sun Bowl) and a 4-0 record against rival Arizona, but the team never really factored into the Pac-12 standings and suffered a number of tough losses that led to unrest in the fanbase. There’s also an ongoing NCAA investigation into alleged recruiting violations and the mass exodus of players and coaches this past offseason.
