  • Was a walk-on at Ohio State, where he was part of two Final Fours under head coach Fred Taylor
    • His teammates included Hall of Famers Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek and Bob Knight
  • Spent two seasons as an assistant at Creighton under Eddie Sutton, who later coached Bob’s son, Doug
  • Joined Jack Hartman‘s staff at Kansas State in 1971, working with the Wildcats for two seasons
  • Became the head coach at Jacksonville in 1973, leading the then D-I independent Dolphins to the semifinals of the 1974 NIT in his first season
    • Went 35-21 over two seasons as the helm before leaving for Milwaukee
  • Was the head coach at Milwaukee (then also a D-I independent) for a total of five seasons
    • Was 62-70 overall, never reaching the postseason with the Panthers
    • After Gottlieb’s departure in 1980, the program dropped back down to D-II play
  • Last collegiate jobs were as an assistant at Long Beach State under Tex Winter and at Oregon State under Ralph Miller
  • Spent the rest of his coaching career at the AAU level, while also leading the Branch West Basketball Academy in Southern California
  • Had two sons and a daughter; son Doug played at Oklahoma State and spent many years as a television and radio analyst before becoming a coach, himself; other son Gregg is a longtime D-I assistant coach
