- Alma Mater: George Washington University (BS, 1969)
- A Parade All-American as a senior at Maytown HS (KY), Tallent started his collegiate career playing for the legendary Adolph Rupp and the Kentucky Wildcats (1965-67)
- Though averaging 12.6 ppg as a junior, Tallent was kicked off the team after a verbal spat with Rupp during a game in 1967
- Tallent transferred to George Washington and sat out the following season per NCAA rules; spent one year with the Colonials playing for head coach Wayne Dobbs and had the fifth-best scoring average in the nation
- Later inducted into the George Washington Athletics Hall of Fame (class of 1990)
- Briefly played with the Denver Rockets in the ABA before returning to GW to coach in 1970
- Was an assistant under Carl Slone for four seasons before becoming the head coach at age 28
- Went 102-84 in seven seasons at the helm, finishing over .500 five times including a 20-7 record in his second year
- Worked in the private sector after coaching, spending time working in marketing for Blue Cross Blue Shield of National Capital Area
