  • Alma Mater: Morgan State University (BA, 1967)
  • Wade played football at Morgan State in his hometown of Baltimore before starting a pro career
    • Played three seasons as a DB in the NFL, one each with the Steelers, Redskins and Broncos
  • Became the head basketball coach at Dunbar HS in Baltimore in 1975, leading the program for 11 years
    • Went 341-25 overall, including a two-year stretch (1981-83) in which his team was 60-0
      • Named Coach of the Year by USA Today in 1983
    • Coached several future NBA players, including Reggie Lewis, Muggsy Bogues, Reggie Williams and David Wingate
  • Hired in 1986 to be the head coach at Maryland, becoming the first African-American coach of a major sport in the ACC
    • Took over a rebuilding program coming off the fallout of Len Bias’ death and the ensuing academic scandal
    • Went 18-13 and reached the NCAA Tournament in 1988, but that appearance was later vacated by the NCAA
      • Wade was found to have given monetary loans to players and having lied to the NCAA on multiple occasions
    • Wade was fired in 1989, going 35-49 officially in three seasons at the helm
  • As a result of the scandal, he was given a five-year show-cause and never coached in college again
    • The Terps were barred from postseason play and live television broadcasts in 1990-91 and put on probation
