Incarnate Word parting ways with head coach Dr. Carson Cunningham

After five seasons as the head men’s basketball coach, Dr. Carson Cunningham is out at Incarnate Word. Cunningham went 42-105 overall and never finished higher than 8th in the Southland, winning 12 over fewer games each year.

“We want to thank Coach Cunningham for his hard work and dedication to the university and the young men in our basketball program and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors,” AD Richard Duran said in a statement on Tuesday. “We feel that this is the right time for a change in leadership and a new voice to lead the team both on and off the court.”

IWU has never played in the D-I NCAA Tournament and has just one postseason appearance (2015 CIT) since moving up to the highest level ten years ago. Cunningham took over for the late Ken Burmeister, who had success at the D-II level but could not maintain that success after the move and was fired in 2018.
