  • Hometown: New York City, New York
  • Alma Mater: University of Idaho (BA)
  • Originally from New York City, MacMillan first attended Oberlin College (OH) before finishing his degree at Idaho
  • First head coaching job was with the Vandals; he went 94-36 in seven seasons and won PCC titles in 1921 and 1922
    • Was also the head baseball coach at Idaho from 1921-1927
  • Left for Minnesota in 1927 and coached the Golden Gophers for the next fifteen years
    • After a slow start, MacMillan turned Minnesota into a more competitive program; won the Big Ten title in 1937
    • Stopped coaching basketball in 1942 and became the head baseball coach at Minnesota
    • Continued coaching baseball until 1947, but in 1945 he returned to the basketball program for three more seasons
    • Compiled a 196-156 record over 18 total seasons at the helm; resigned in 1948 citing health reasons
  • Briefly coached the Tri-Cities Blackhawks (now Atlanta Hawks) in the NBA in 1950, going 9-14 after replacing Red Auerbach mid-season
  • Spent several years with the Minneapolis (now LA) Lakers assisting John Kundla, one of his own former players and assistants at Minnesota
  • Passed away from cancer in 1963 at the age of 76
