- Played at UCSB for head coach Willie Wilton then briefly in a semi-pro league for the Kirby Shoes
- Started out as a teacher, initially at Mark Twain High School in San Diego, CA
- Moved onto Carson HS (CA) where he became the head boys’ basketball coach in 1970
- He led the team for 12 years, winning a 4A state title in his final year there (1981-82)
- Left for a job on Ken Hayes‘ staff at Oral Roberts in 1982; his two sons, Mark and Jeff, were players at ORU
- Hayes was fired eight games into the season and Acres was elevated to interim head coach
- Mark Acres was MCC Co-POY in 1983 and went on to play for many years in the NBA
- Stayed on for two more full seasons, going 47-34 overall as the Eagles’ head coach
- Won the MCC title and MCC Tournament in 1984 to reach the NCAA Tournament; Acres was named MCC Co-COY
- Resigned in 1985 after a 15-15 season; leaving coaching and moving into other fields
- Hayes was fired eight games into the season and Acres was elevated to interim head coach
- Worked as a referee for high school basketball, football and baseball, and also worked in the financial services industry
- Passed away in June 2012 at age 78; survived by his wife, Sandi, their three sons and six grandchildren
