- Hometown: Charlotte, North Carolina
- Alma Mater: University of North Carolina at Charlotte (BA, 1995)
- Originally pursued a career in law enforcement, serving as a school resource officer at his alma mater North Mecklenburg HS
- After a heart attack, Baucom shifted to coaching; served as head boys’ coach at NMHS for four years while also earning a degree from UNC Charlotte
- Hired in 1995 to be an assistant coach at Davidson under Bob McKillop
- Spent another seven years as an assistant, working at D-II Mars Hill, Northwestern State (under J. D. Barnett) and Western Carolina (under Steve Shurina)
- Was head coach at D-II Tusculum College (TN) for two years; went 37-19 and reached the 2005 D-II NCAA Tournament
- Spent ten seasons as head coach at VMI, winning 151 games and going to the CIT Semifinals in 2014
- Became the head coach at The Citadel on March 30, 2015
- Went 77-136 through seven seasons at the helm; fired in March 2022
