Former coach Gary Colson passes away, age 89
Former Fresno State, New Mexico, Pepperdine and Valdosta State head coach Gary Colson has passed away at age 89. Colson had 551 career wins, took the Pepperdine Waves to the Sweet Sixteen in 1976 and was named WAC COY (1984) and WCC COY (1976).
During his time in Albuquerque, he helped rebuild the program by taking the Lobos to five-straight NIT appearances.
In addition to his accomplishments on the court, Colson served on the NCAA Rules and Officiating Committees and was instrumental in bringing the three-point shot to the college game in 1986.
Colson was inducted into the Lipscomb Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998 and the UNM Ring of Honor in 2005.
