- Hometown: Minnesota Lake, Minnesota
- Alma Mater: University of Minnesota (BA, 1913)
- Started his coaching career while a student at UM, coaching the varsity teams at Lockport HS and Riverside HS
- Coached the Superior Normal School’s (now UW-Superior) basketball team for two seasons, going 20-6-2
- Went 22-12 as the head coach at Saint Louis, also coaching the Billikens’ football team for a year
- Served at Great Lakes Naval Station during World War I, then coached at then-D-II St. Thomas and D-II Allegheny (PA)
- At Valparaiso, he coached the basketball and football teams for two seasons and the baseball team for one
- Went 31-13 in basketball and 10-6 in football
- Arrived at Notre Dame in 1923, the part of his career for which Keogan is best remembered
- Was 327-97 in 20 season as head basketball coach, mostly before the NCAA Tournament
- Had two teams – 1926-27 and 1935-36 – retroactively named Helms Foundation National Champions
- Also coached the baseball team for five seasons and assisted legendary football coach Knute Rockne
- Suffered a heart attack at his South Bend home in February 1943, passing away at age 52
- Survived by his wife of eleven years, Ruby
- Assistant Ed “Moose” Krause coached the team for the rest of the season; he would spend over 30 years as AD at Notre Dame
- Inducted into the Naismith Memorial HOF (c/o 1961) and the College Basketball HOF (inaugural c/o 2006)
