- Attended Archbishop Quigley Prep in Chicago before playing for George Keogan at Notre Dame
- Was teammates with future collegiate head coaches George Ireland and Ray Meyer
- Started his coaching career at Mount Carmel HS in Chicago’s South Side
- Coached there for 11 seasons, split by a three-year stint in the US Navy during World War II
- Spent one season as the head coach at Loyola Chicago, going 15-14 with the Ramblers
- Returned to alma mater Notre Dame in 1951, where he would coach the Irish for thirteen seasons
- Went 199-131 overall, reaching six NCAA Tournaments and four Sweet Sixteens
- Left Notre Dame in 1964 and returned to his hometown, working for the Chicago Park District
