- Hometown: Southern Pines, North Carolina
- Alma Mater: Fayetteville State University (BA, 1977)
- After graduating from Pinecrest HS (NC), Capel attended nearby Fayetteville State and played D-II basketball
- Left school in 1971 and spent the next four years serving in the United States Army
- Returned to Fayetteville to finish his degree and spend more year playing basketball
- Became a volunteer basketball coach at Pinecrest HS in 1978, then became varsity head coach in 1980
- Also coached wrestling, baseball and JV football and served as the school’s assistant principal
- Hired by Bob Staak at Wake Forest in 1986, spending the next three seasons as one of his assistants
- Became the head coach at his other alma mater, D-II Fayetteville State in 1989
- Went 63-51 in four seasons there, improving from 7 wins in his first year to back-to-back 20 win seasons and a D-II NCAA Tournament appearance in 1993
- Left FSU for North Carolina A&T in 1993, going 16-14 and winning the MEAC Tournament for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in his sole season with the Aggies
- Hired as the head coach of Old Dominion in 1994, going 122-98 in seven seasons at the helm
- Won the CAA title in 1995 and 1997 and claimed CAA Tournament crowns the same two seasons
- The 1995 team is remembered for a thrilling 3OT upset of 3-seed Villanova in the NCAA First Round
- In addition to those two NCAA Tournament berths, his Monarchs went to NIT in 1999
- Resigned in 2001 following back-to-back losing seasons
- Won the CAA title in 1995 and 1997 and claimed CAA Tournament crowns the same two seasons
- That same year, Capel became the head coach of the Fayetteville Patriots, a new NBA Development League team
- Was 66-60 in three seasons with the team, reaching the NBDL Finals in 2003 and semifinals in 2004
- Spent the rest of career in the NBA, spending seven years with the Charlotte Bobcats and two with the Philadelphia 76ers
- Coached under Bernie Bickerstaff, Sam Vincent, Larry Brown and Paul Silas in Charlotte and Doug Collins in Philadelphia
- Diagnosed with Amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2014 and later passed away in 2017 at the age of 64
- His sons are also college coaches: Jeff Capel III is the head coach at Pittsburgh and Jason Capel, one of his brother’s assistants, previously the head coach at Appalachian State
