- Got his first head coaching job in 1969 at Spence JHS in Dallas, TX
- Worked as an assistant for eight seasons at North Texas under head coach Bill Blakeley
- Spent three years as head coach at Dallas South Oak Cliff HS, going 89-12 overall
- Became the head coach at North Texas in 1986, leading the Mean Green for seven years
- Led the program to Southland titles in 1988 and 1989, earning Southland COY honors both years
- In 1988, the Mean Green also won the Southland Tournament to reach their first-ever NCAA Tournament
- Went 84-118 overall as head coach; inducted into the North Texas Athletics HOF in 2009
- After UNT, Gales worked as assistant principal at James Madison HS in Dallas for eleven years
