- Alma Mater: La Salle College (BA, 1968)
- Graduated from Abington HS in the Philly suburbs before going on to play at La Salle for head coaches Joe Heyer and Jim Harding
- Ervin was the basketball team captain as a senior (and was also captain of the baseball team)
- Spent nine seasons as an assistant at his alma mater, two under Tom Gola and seven under Paul Westhead
- Left in 1977 to be the head coach at La Salle HS (PA), a position he held for two years
- Returned to his alma mater in 1979 as head coach, leading the Explorers for the next seven seasons
- Went 119-87 overall, highlighted by two 20+ win seasons and three postseason appearances
- Won the East Coast title in 1983, the MAAC title in 1984 and two East Coast Tournaments to get NCAA bids in 1980 and 1983
- Ervin resigned in March 1986 after finishing the previous season 14-14 (8-6 MAAC)
- Later served as head coach at William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, winning a league title in 1988
