- Alma Mater: Michigan State University (BA, 1992)
- Played at Michigan State under legendary head coach Jud Heathcote, earning All-Big Ten third team honors as a senior in 1992
- Spent several years playing professional basketball in Europe before returning to the States to start a coaching career
- Spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan under Jay Smith
- Tenure at CMU included a dramatic worst-to-first turnaround, winning just six games in 1999-00 and then winning the MAC a year later at 20-8
- Returned to his alma mater Michigan State in 2002 as an assistant coach to new Spartans’ head man Tom Izzo
- Worked on Izzo‘s staff for nine seasons, the last four as associate head coach
- Was part of three trips to the Final Four, including the Spartans’ runner-up finish in 2009
- Hired as the head coach at Northern Illinois in March 2011, taking over a struggling Huskies program
- After some additional down years, NIU won 20 games in 2015-16 and appeared in the inaugural Vegas 16 Tournament
- Fired in January 2021 after a 1-7 start to the season; Montgomery went 124-170 in nine and a half years at the helm
- Montgomery then joined Mike Davis‘ staff at Detroit Mercy as an assistant coach for the remainder of the 2020-21 season
- Returned to East Lansing again in 2021 to become Izzo‘s recruiting coordinator; part of three more NCAA Tournaments with MSU
- Hired in April 2024 to be the new head coach at Detroit Mercy in the Horizon League
