OFFICIAL: Matt Rhule hired as Nebraska head football coach
Just one day after capping their 2022 season with a win, Nebraska scored an even bigger W. The school announced Saturday morning the hiring of Matt Rhule as the Huskers’ new football coach. Rhule spent the last few years in the NFL after successful runs in college at Temple and Baylor.
“Coach Rhule has created a winning culture throughout his coaching career,” said AD Trev Alberts, “and he will provide great leadership for the young men in our football program. Matt is detail-oriented, his teams are disciplined and play a physical brand of football. Matt also has the personality and relationship-building skills to build a great staff and excel in recruiting.”
Rhule was fired by the Carolina Panthers earlier this year after two and a half years a the head coach (11-27 overall). But his reputation at the collegiate level immediately made him the hottest name on the 2022-23 coaching carousel.
“It is a tremendous honor to be chosen to lead the Nebraska Football program,” Rhule said in a press release. “When you think of great, tradition-rich programs in college football Nebraska is right at the top of the list. The fan base is second to none, and I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to coach in Memorial Stadium on Tom Osborne Field. My family and I are so grateful to become a part of the Husker Family, and we can’t wait to get started.”
It took just three years for Rhule to turn around the Temple program, going 2-10 in year one before winning 10 games in both the 2015 and 2016 seasons. That re-build landed him the spot at Baylor, the first permanent head coach after the messy divorce from Art Briles and the scandals he left behind. Going just 1-11 in his first year in Waco, Rhule had the Bears in the Sugar Bowl by year three – BU finished 11-3 and ranked #12/13.
