  • Alma Mater: Louisiana Tech University (BA, 1967)
  • Originally from Chicago, Huckabay played HS baseball and basketball in Louisiana; played baseball at Louisiana Tech
  • Started his career as an assistant basketball coach at the HS level in Louisiana
  • Joined Dale Brown‘s staff at LSU in 1979, working with the Tigers for the next four seasons
    • Was part of two NCAA Tournament teams, including the 1980-81 squad that reached the NCAA Final Four
  • Hired in 1983 to be the head coach at Marshall and led the Thundering Herd for six seasons
    • Went 129-58 overall with three NCAA Tournament appearances and one NIT
    • Won the SoCon title three times and claimed three SoCon Tournament crowns
    • An NCAA investigation into recruiting violations led to Huckabay’s resignation in 1989; the 1987 NCAA Tournament bid, as long as the team’s first-round loss, were later vacated as a result
  • Later returned to Louisiana where he started coaching HS basketball once again
    • Inducted into the Louisiana High School Activities Association Hall of Fame in 2005
  • Diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2005 and passed away in March 2006 at the age of 60
    • Posthumously inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame (class of 2006)
