Russell Turner Facts
- Russell Devlin Turner
- Born October 24, 1970
- Hometown: Roanoke, Virginia
- Alma Mater: Hampden-Sydney College (BA, 1992)
- Played for years at D-III Hampden-Sydney, twice earning All-America honors; elected into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2002
- Started coaching in 1993 at his alma mater and was hired one year later to join Dave Odom‘s staff at Wake Forest
- After six seasons at Wake, he joined Hall of Fame head coach Mike Montgomery‘s staff at Stanford; Turner followed Montgomery to the NBA in 2004 and became an assistant with the Golden State Warriors
- Though Montgomery was let go after two seasons, Turner stayed on an assistant for four more years under Don Nelson
- As a college assistant, Turner recruited and/or coached several NBA players, including Tim Duncan, Josh Howard, Jason & Jarron Collins and Josh Childress
- Hired in 2010 to be the head coach at UC Irvine; after winning 13 and 12 games in his first two respective seasons, the Anteaters won 21+ games in eight of the next eleven
- Turner has won seven Big West titles and two Big West Tournaments during his tenure at UCI
- Reached the NCAAs twice (the first two D-I appearances for the program) and finished as 2016 CIT Runner-Up
