- Graduated from Rock Island HS (IL) and then played basketball at Iowa for head coach Bucky O’Connor
- Part of the Hawkeye teams that won two Big Ten titles reached the NCAA Final Four in 1955 and 1956
- His jersey number #46 was retired by the Iowa program in 1980
- Joined O’Connor’s staff as an assistant in 1956 and two years later became head coach following O’Connor’s death
- Took over the team just weeks before his 24th birthday and coached the team for six seasons
- Went 72-69 as the Hawkeyes’ head coach and in 1960-61, achieved an AP Top 5 ranking
- Among the players he recruited and coached was future 5x NBA Champion and Hall of Fame coach Don Nelson
- Stepped away from coaching in 1964 and entered the private sector in Denver, Colorado
- Passed away in 2010 at the age of 76 after a long battle with cancer
