- Alma Mater: Southern University (BS) / Prairie View A&M University (M.Ed)
- Born in New Orleans and raised in the close-knit community of Sebastopol, Louisiana, Johnson is the son of a coach
- Worked on the AAU circuit in Houston and Louisiana; was head coach of Hollis Price Elite AAU from 2006-10
- Moved up to the college ranks in 2010, spending two seasons assisting Jimmy Tillette at Samford
- Joined Danny Kaspar‘s staff at Texas State in 2015, serving as an assistant with the Bobcats for five seasons
- In June 2020, Johnson was named interim head coach when Kaspar went on leave (and later resigned)
- Led the Bobcats to a share of the Sun Belt title in 2021, the program’s first title since 2011; Johnson was named Sun Belt COY
- In March 2021, the school announced that Johnson would be the full-time head coach moving forward
- The Bobcats repeated as Sun Belt champs (outright) in 2022 after going 12-3 in league play and Johnson earned his second SBC COY award
- In June 2022, Texas State extended Johnson’s contract through the 2026-27 season
