- Born March 9, 1959
- Hometown: West Hempstead, New York
- Alma Mater: Hofstra University (BA, 1983)
- Played two seasons at St. John’s under Lou Carnesecca before finishing his career and degree at Hofstra under Dick Berg
- Played professionally in Europe and Australia before starting his coaching career
- Served as the head coach at St. Mary’s HS in Manhasset, NY from 1991-2005
- Went 265-78 overall during that time and won four NY Class A Catholic HS state titles
- Spent one year as the head coach at Suffolk CC on Long Island, going 22-10 overall
- Hired as the head coach at Division II Long Island-Post in 2006
- Won three-straight ECC titles and two ECC Tournaments, leading the Pioneers to two NCAA D-II Tournaments
- Became the head coach at Iona in 2010, leading the Gaels to the postseason in each of his nine seasons at the helm (six NCAA, two NIT and one CIT)
- Won four MAAC regular season titles and five MAAC Tournament crowns during his tenure at Iona
- Missed the 2019-20 season as he dealt with a health issue; the team was led by associate head coach Tra Arnold
- In March 2020, Cluess stepped down to focus on his recovery; he will take an advisory role at Iona College
- Cluess was awarded the Gene Bartow Award in 2020 after stepping away from coaching
- Along with his wife, Karen, has two sons
