Tom Herman out after less than two seasons at Florida Atlantic
Florida Atlantic AD Brian White announced Monday that the school was parting ways with head football coach Tom Herman after less than two seasons at the helm. Herman went 6-16 (3-9 AAC) overall and was just 2-8 (0-6) this season, with the Owls currently on a five-game losing streak.
“I extend my appreciation to Tom Herman for his dedication to our university and our student-athletes,” White said in the release. “I informed Tom of my decision this morning and then met with the staff and team. We firmly believe in our ability to win championships and compete for bowl games, and that remains our standard.”
Herman was hired in 2023 with previous head coaching experience at Texas (2017-20) and Houston (2015-16). He was a rising star from his time at UH, including a 13-1 record in his first year as head coach, but failed to live up to expectations in four seasons with the Longhorns despite going 4-0 in bowl games and logging a 10-win season in year two.
The FAU job is a good one for the right candidate, with a fantastic location in a fertile recruiting ground and a wide-open AAC landscape. Special teams coordinator Chad Lunsford will lead the Owls for their final two games, with Charlotte (3-7) coming to town this weekend. The search for a permanent replacement is underway.
