- Alvin Joseph Brooks Jr.
- Born August 6, 1959
- Hometown: Houston, Texas
- Alma Mater: Lamar University (BS, 1982)
- Was all-city at Wheatley HS in Houston and then played for head coaches Billy Tubbs and Pat Foster at Lamar
- Played for one year each at Sam Houston State (under Dennis Price) and Henderson County JC
- Later inducted into the Lamar Athletics HOF (class of 1981)
- Began his coaching career in 1981 at Lamar, assisting Foster for five seasons
- Elevated to head coach at Houston in 1993, leading the Cougars for five seasons
- Was just 54-84 at the helm, finishing above .500 just once (1995-96)
- Since 1999, Brooks has worked as a Division I assistant across a number of different programs, mostly in Texas
- Coached under James Dickey (Texas Tech), Johnny Jones (North Texas) and Billy Gillispie (UTEP, Texas A&M and UK) before returning to Houston in 2010
- In six years with Gillispie, Brooks was part of four NCAA Tournaments, two NITs and a WAC title (in 2004)
- Spent four years as Dickey‘s associate head coach and then has stayed on as an assistant under Kelvin Sampson
- In this second stint at Houston, the Cougars have twice won the AAC and been to the postseason five times
- The 2020-21 squad became the first Cougars group to reach the NCAA Final Four since 1984
- In April 2021, Brooks was announced as the new head coach at his alma mater, Lamar
