Former Wright State head coach Billy Donlon hired by UMKC

Northwestern assistant coach Billy Donlon, who spent six seasons as the head coach at Wright State, has been hired as the new head man at UMKC.

This is the second head coaching opportunity for Donlon, who was 109-94 during his tenure at Wright State. He led the Raiders to the 2013 CBI and 2014 CIT and won 21+ games three times. He was let go in March 2016, a somewhat surprising move given the Raiders’ 22-13 (13-5) record that season.

A Chicago-area native, Donlon has been coaching and recruiting in the Midwest for the since arriving at Wright State as associate head coach in 2006. In addition to working on Chris Collins‘ staff at Northwestern for the last two years, Donlon spent one year under John Beilein at Michigan.

UMKC as a program has never been to the NCAA Tournament, moving up to the college game’s highest level prior to the 1989-90 season. An introductory press conference is scheduled to take place on Friday.
