Utah State hires South Dakota’s Craig Smith

Craig Smith, who was 79-55 in four seasons at South Dakota, has been hired as the new head coach at Utah State. Smith’s Coyotes won the Summit League in 2017 and finished second this past season.

A year ago, when he was just coming off that league title, Smith’s name was very buzzy on the coaching carousel (specifically the Drake opening).

Previous head coach Tim Duryea was fired after three seasons after three years seasons without any postseason appearances. The Aggies were a postseason mainstay under longtime head coach Stew Morrill. His teams won 402 games in 17 seasons, going to eight NCAA Tournaments, four NITs and finished as CIT runner-up in 2012.
