Utah assistant Eric Peterson hired as South Dakota head coach

Eric Peterson, an assistant coach at Utah who previously worked at South Dakota, has been hired to be the Coyotes’ next head men’s basketball coach. This is the first D-I head coaching job for Peterson, who has been on Craig Smith‘s staff for the last eight seasons across three programs.

Peterson was an assistant coach for at South Dakota for four seasons (2014-18) and was part of the program’s only NIT and CBI appearances (2017 and 2018, respectively). He will be formally introduced in a press conference on Wednesday on campus.

The USD program has never been to the NCAA Tournament, having moved up to the D-I level in 2008. They parted ways with previous coach Todd Lee earlier this month after four seasons at the helm.
