Jason Gardner resigns as IUPUI head coach following OWI arrest

Two days after he was arrested in Indianapolis for OWI, Jason Gardner resigned Tuesday as the head men’s basketball coach at IUPUI. Gardner was 64-94 in five seasons at the helm of the Jaguars’ program.

Per a report, Gardner was found by police at 4:30am Sunday morning in the middle of an intersection, asleep behind the wheel of his car. After struggling to wake up and failing sobriety tests, the former coach was booked at Hamilton County Jail.

He was released Tuesday morning and resigned the same day, as confirmed by Assistant AD Ed Holdaway. According to FOX59, associate head coach Byron Rimm II will serve as the interim head coach for the upcoming season. However, the school has yet to announce that (Gardner has been removed from the IUPUI basketball website but Rimm is still listed as associate head coach).

The Jags open the season against crosstown rival Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse on November 6th.

UPDATE 8/28: Rimm II has been officially named the interim head coach for 2019-20
