- Hometown: Oakland, California
- Alma Mater: University of the Redlands (BA, 2004)
- The California-native played three seasons at D-III Redlands for head coach Gary Smith, and served as a team captain
- After graduation he initial worked in the private sector in the medical device industry
- Started his coaching career in 2014 as an assistant coach at Alameda HS (CA)
- Joined Andy Newman‘s staff at D-II Texas-Permian Basin in 2015 as an assistant and was elevated to associate head coach in 2016
- Spent on year at Portland State as an assistant under Barret Peery and then was hired by Chris Mack in 2018 to be his DBO at Louisvill
- Worked at UL for four seasons (one as an assistant coach) and was part of the 2019-20 team that ranked as high as #1 in the AP Poll
- Following the change in staff at Louisville, Fennell was hired by Mark Pope as an assistant coach at BYU
- Hired in April 2024 to become the head coach at UTRGV, ahead of the program’s move from the WAC to the Southland
