- Hometown: Ravenna, Ohio
- Alma Mater: Purdue University (BA, 1994)
- Out of Highland HS in Anderson, IN, Darner played at Purdue under legendary head coach Gene Keady
- Served one year as a student assistant for Keady after graduation
- Spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Murray State under head coach Mark Gottfried
- Was an assistant at the D-II level for five years, one at Lincoln Memorial (TN) and four at Ashland (OH)
- Spent four years as the head coach at D-II Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, IN
- Went 74-45 overall and led the Pumas to the NCAA D-II Tournament in 2006
- Took over at Florida Southern in 2006, serving as the Moccasins head coach for the next nine seasons
- Won or shared the Sunshine State Conference title six times and won six conference tournaments
- Went to eight straight NCAA D-II Tournaments, culminating in a National Championship in his final year (2015)
- Hired as the new head coach at Green Bay in March 2015
- Led the Phoenix to a Horizon League Tournament title and NCAA berth in his first season
- In 2019, the Phoenix finished as runner-up in the CIT
- Fired in May 2020 after five seasons as the head coach
- Darner spent one season on James Whitford‘s staff at Ball State as an assistant coach
- Spent the 2022-23 season as an assistant at High Point under interim head coach G.G. Smith, then in April 2023 was announced as the associate head coach at Eastern Illinois under Marty Simmons; left the following month for the Tampa job
- In May 2023, Darner returned to the Sunshine State Conference to be the new head coach at D-II Tampa
