- Born February 11, 1970
- Hometown: Statesville, North Carolina
- Alma Mater: Davidson College (BA, 1992)
- Played football for four years at Davidson and also played basketball for two years under longtime Wildcat’s head coach Bob McKillop
- Briefly played professional football overseas before joining McKillop‘s staff as an assistant in 1993
- Though he did not attend to make coaching a career at first, Matheny ended up working on McKillop‘s staff for sixteen seasons at Davidson
- Promoted to associate head coach in 2003, a position he held for his final six seasons at the school
- Time at Davidson included five trips to the NCAA Tournament, highlighted by Stephen Curry leading the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 2008
- Hired in March 2009 to become the new head coach at Elon, located less than 100 miles from Davidson
- Won a share of the SoCon title in 2013, earning a trip to the CIT that season
- Fired in March 2019 after ten seasons at the helm for the Phoenix
- Returned to Davidson in May 2022, rejoining the coaching staff of Bob McKillop
- Along with his wife, Jennifer, has one son and one daughter
