- Alma Mater: Appalachian State University (BA, 2000)
- Played four seasons at App State for Buzz Peterson; stayed on as a student assistant for one season under Houston Fancher
- Rejoined Peterson in 2001 as a grad assistant at Tennessee before returning to App State in 2002 as one of Fancher‘s assistants
- After eight seasons with the Mountaineers (nine under Fancher and one under Peterson), McMahon joined Peterson‘s staff at his new job UNC Wilmington
- Was hired as an assistant at Murray State by Steve Prohm in 2011, staying on his staff until he left the program in 2015
- McMahon had actually accepted a position as an assistant at Louisiana Tech but returned to Murray to be head coach
- Led the Racers to both an Ohio Valley title and Tournament championship in his third season (2018) and repeated both titles the following year; earned trips to the NCAA Tournament in both years
- Won a fourth OVC title in 2022, going a perfect 18-0 in league play, then won the OVC Tournament for the third time; McMahon was named OVC COY for the first time in his tenure
- Left Murray in March 2022 to become the head coach of the LSU Tigers
