- Graduated from Bishop Loughlin HS in Brooklyn and went on to play four seasons at South Carolina under head coaches Eddie Fogler and Dave Odom
- Started coaching right away as a grad manager at Furman under Larry Davis, then as an assistant under Buzz Peterson at Coastal Carolina and as Mike Young‘s associate head coach at Wofford
- Returned to his alma mater in 2008, spending four seasons as an assistant under Darrin Horn and one more under Frank Martin
- Joined Brad Underwood‘s staff at Stephen F. Austin in 2013, following Underwood to Oklahoma State in 2016
- In March 2017, Boynton was promoted to replace Underwood as Oklahoma State head coach
- Led the Cowboys to the 2018 NIT after just missing a NCAA at-large bid; made the NCAA Tournament in 2021 as a 4-seed
- Boynton was given a 7-year contract extension in March 2021 that raised his salary to an average of $3 million per season
- Along with his wife, Jenny, has one son and one daughter
