- Started out playing at Dallas Christian College (TX) then transferred to and graduated from Texas Wesleyan
- First coaching jobs were at Northlake College, Texas Wesleyan (under Terry Waldrop) and Texas College
- Spent seventeen years as an assistant coach at the Division I level, working under Darrell Hawkins and Byron Rimm II at PVAMU, George Nessman at SJSU, Danny Kaspar at SFA and Texas State, Kelvin Sampson at Houston, Paul Mills at ORU, Eric Konkol at La Tech and Mark Adams at Texas Tech
- During that time, Hester was part of several postseasons, including the Red Raiders 2022 Sweet Sixteen run
- Also interned with the semi-pro Texas Rim Rockers franchise in 2003
- Hired in March 2022 to return to Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs’ new head coach
