Ohio’s Tim Albin hired as Charlotte head coach

One day after leading the Ohio Bobcats to a triumphant MAC championship victory, Tim Albin is on the move to Charlotte. The new 49ers head coach went 33-19 in four seasons at Ohio, including three-straight 10-win seasons.

“It is a true privilege and honor to welcome Tim, his wife Brooke, daughter Tori, and son Treyce to Charlotte,” said AD Mike Hill. “We had incredible interest in this position which speaks to the remarkable opportunity ahead of Tim and the program he will build here in the Queen City. From the outset, we sought an experienced collegiate coach with a proven track record of sustained success on the field and in the recruitment and development of student-athletes. Tim’s professional accolades and resume check all those boxes, but his leadership, stewardship, and commitment to the holistic development of our football student-athletes set him apart.”

Albin hails from Oklahoma, playing and coaching at Northwest Oklahoma State. He spent several years working for Frank Solich at Nebraska before first arriving at Ohio in 2005 to be Solich’s OC/RB. Albin added assistant head coach to his role in 2019 and then in 2021 got the big job when Solich stepped down. After a 3-9 first year, Albin led the Bobcats to 10-4, 10-3 and 10-3 records over the next three seasons. The Bobcats won bowl games in each of the last two years and are headed to the Cure Bowl later this month.

“I am beyond excited to begin this new journey at Charlotte and start the process of developing the 49ers into the championship-caliber program we all believe it can and should be,” Albin said. “I would like to thank Chancellor Sharon Gaber and Mike Hill for their trust and belief in our future together. I cannot wait to get started.”

Charlotte was led by Biff Poggi over the last two seasons, going 5-7 this past year including a 2-0 finish under interim head coach Tim Brewster. The 49ers have played in just one bowl game since moving up to the FBS level, the 2019 Bahamas Bowl.
