Assistants promoted to head coach at South Dakota State, San Francisco

Two assistant coaches were promoted on Wednesday, replacing head coaches that left for bigger jobs on the same day:

South Dakota State

Eric Henderson named head coach at South Dakota State, where he has been an assistant under T.J. Otzelberger for the last three seasons. Henderson is stepping into his first collegiate head coaching role, though he spent time as a high school coach in Wisconsin.

“Eric has been a big part of the success that we have had at South Dakota State,” AD Justin Sell said on Wednesday. “He is a tremendous teacher and no doubt is prepared to lead our men’s basketball program to continued success.”

San Francisco

Todd Golden was promoted to head coach at San Francisco after working with the Dons for three seasons under Kyle Smith. Golden played at Saint Mary’s and has worked as an assistant at Auburn under Bruce Pearl and on Smith’s staff at Columbia.

“I am excited to announce the hiring of Todd Golden as our new men’s basketball coach,” AD Joan McDermott said. “He’s been the primary recruiter for the Dons while he’s been with us on the Hilltop and promoting him was the logical choice to ensure a smooth transition. Kyle left a great legacy and now it is Todd’s time to take our program to the next level.”
