Kansas City announced on Thursday evening that head men’s basketball coach Billy Donlon is leaving the program. Donlon was 46-39 during his tenure, including a 19-12 record and 3rd place finish in the Summit this past season.

“We believe it is in the best interest of our family that I step down as Head Men’s Basketball Coach,” Donlon said in a statement. “I would like to thank Chancellor Agrawal, Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Martin and the Board of Curators for the incredible opportunity to lead this program. I will always be grateful. Last, and most importantly, I want to thank the players and my coaches and staff over the past three years for all of their dedication and hard work.”

Donlon was hired in 2019 after three seasons as an assistant in the Big Ten at Michigan and Northwestern. Before that, he spent six years as the head coach at Wright State with three 21+ win seasons.

“I want to thank Billy and his wife Melissa for their positive contribution to the Roo family,” AD Dr. Brandon Martin said. “Coach Donlon has left an ineradicable stamp on our program, staff and our campus community at large. We wish Coach Donlon and his family all the best moving forward.”

According to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, Donlon is headed to Clemson where he will reunite with Brad Brownell.
