- Played four seasons at Michigan State for Hall of Fame Spartans’ head coach Jud Heathcote
- Reached the NCAA Tournament three times; was All-Big Ten Honorable Mention as a junior in 1992
- Started his collegiate coaching career as an assistant under Greg Kampe for two seasons at Oakland
- Hired by Tom Crean as an assistant at Marquette in 1999; Crean had been a grad assistant at MSU when Stephens was a freshman
- Went to two NCAA Tournaments in four years, including the Eagles’ 2003 Final Four run with Dwyane Wade
- Returned to his alma mater in 2003 and spent the next nineteen seasons working under Tom Izzo, the last ten as his associate head coach
- Played a key role in the maintained success at MSU, which included 18 NCAA Tournaments (with five Final Fours) and six Big Ten titles during his tenure
- Hired in April 2022 to be the new head coach at Western Michigan in the MAC
