- Hometown: Killeen, Texas
- Alma Mater: Tarleton State University (BA, 1993 & MA, 1995)
- After playing two seasons at McLennan CC (TX), Hooten played for head coach Lonn Reisman at Division II Tarleton State (TX)
- Started coaching in 1991, spending two years at Weatherford College (TX) before joining Reisman’s staff at Tarleton as an assistant coach in 1993
- Worked under Reisman for eleven seasons, during which time the Texans were 204-111 overall
- Arrived at Sam Houston State in 2004, working as one of Bob Marlin‘s assistants for the next six seasons
- Took over as the Bearkats head coach in 2010, winning a share of the Southland regular season title in his first year and the outright title in 2019
- Hooten took Bearkats to four CITs in thirteen seasons at the helm, plus the program’s first two NIT bids in 2019 and 2023
- In 2021, the school made the move from the Southland Conference to the WAC
- Left SHSU to become the head coach at fellow WAC program New Mexico State in March 2023
- Along with his wife, Kristen, has one daughter and one son
