- Born March 5, 1959
- Hometown: Tupelo, Mississippi
- Alma Mater: Mississippi State University (BA, 1981) / Northeast Louisiana University (M.Ed, 1983)
- Started coaching as a graduate assistant at Northeast Louisiana (now Louisiana-Monroe) under head coach Mike Vining before joining Gene Iba‘s staff at Houston Baptist in 1983
- Iba left the school in 1985 but Marlin spent four more seasons as an assistant for new head coach Tommy Jones
- Spent one year on Dana Altman‘s staff at Marshall before becoming the head coach at Pensacola Junior College (FL)
- Went 123-35 overall in five seasons at PJC and won the 1993 NJCAA National Championship
- Returned to D-I in 1995 as an assistant to David Hobbs at Alabama; took over as head coach at Sam Houston State in 1998
- Won 235 games, four conference titles and went to two NCAA Tournaments in twelve seasons at SHSU
- Became the head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette (now Louisiana) in 2010
- Led the Ragin’ Cajuns to a Sun Belt divisional title in his first season an NCAA Tournament berth in his fourth (2014)
- Again won a Sun Belt title in 2018, earning a trip to the NIT, then won the 2023 Sun Belt Tournament to get back to the NCAAT
- Marlin was let go in December 2024 after 14+ seasons at the helm following a 3-9 (1-0) start to the year
